ALC Drive vs. PSK IMD vs. Power - Giving the KU7QQ IMD Meter a Workout

Sound Operation or Urban Ledgends...

The general instructions for setup and operation of a PSK transmitter generally contain two operational guides which seem to be taken as written in stone. They are:

1. Adjust the AF drive to the rig just to the point where the ALC level is zero.  AF drive beyond this level will cause the transmitted PSK signal to breakdown in a gross way resulting in the PSK equivilant of splatter which could cover the band.

2. A 100w rig should be run in the 25-50% power range because the duty cycle of PSK is damaging and the siganl is cleaner.

Today we take a look at these guidelines and see if they hold up under some informal testing.
